Preserving the Roots - Where Bluegrass Tradition Meets Symphonic Grandeur

The Alberta Bluegrass Initiative began as a vision to honour Canadian Bluegrass artist Steve Fisher, recently inducted into the Canadian bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. After releasing 6 celebrated CD’s, leading five touring bands, and hosting a premiere bluegrass Program on CKUA radio, Steve’s landmark roots album “River” held the #1 spot on the International Folk Roots Chart for 13 consecutive weeks. Renay Eng-Fisher inspired by Steve’s passion and her experience directing a large-scale project with the Red Deer Symphony Or hestra, for her Environmental Project based on her Masters’ Thesis, conceived this initiative as a way to celebrate Steve’s profound love for traditional bluegrass and roots music by blending it with the sweeping arrangement of the 20 piece Alberta Philharmonic orchestra, directed by Maestro Allan Gilliland, PhD.

Our Unique Mission and Impact. We believe that by introducing bluegrass music to audiences in a symphonic format, we can raise awareness for this genre and ensures sustainability. Many regional community clubs and grassroots acoustic networks lack national visibility, and without structured intervention, future generations of Canadian students and audiences risk loosing touch with this distinct music heritage. Our approach fills this cultural gap by elevating historic folk roots through elite, grand-scale symphonic orchestration. With Marstro Allan Gilliland, PhD, scoring and conducting modern versions of Steve’s favourite traditional songs, we aim to preserve the historic storytelling and unique collaborative acoustic musicianship of bluegrass.
